Digg Is Dead Long Live Tweetmeme

By

Update: Digg Didn't Die but Tweetmeme is Big

In a nation by nation comparison, Digg has held it's own. But "face" it, both Tweetmeme and Digg are challenged in the US by Facebook. You see a lot more like buttons from facebook than from the other sites. The internet evolves.

Also, Digg is being challenged by Pligg sites. I am glad to see it as the more rating sites we have, the more democratization of the web we have.

Be sure to check out the efforts to organize Twitter like Listorious and Topsy.

Long Live Tweetmeme.com

Clearly the new bookmarking is tweetmeme. Unless Twitter allows other bookmarking services to interface with Twitter in the way Tweetmeme does, Digg and the other bookmarking services will go the way of the Edsel. Oh, I date myself. You don't remember the Edsel? Well, you won't remember Digg either.

Of course, I have a bone to pick with Digg. They booted me off their service and banned my IP when I first got onto the social networking scene, because of my ignorance. I requested reinstatement and even begged them, and they didn't even bother to email a response. I have always felt that Digg owners must be arrogant people. Tweetmeme is about to humble them. I don't wish the wrath of divine intervention upon these fellows. I am just happy that they are no longer the only game in town, and they may have to find a new game in the end.

Anyway, I digress. Bottom line: Digg, this website is a "Digg" at you. Get it? BWAA HA-HA-HA-HAAA.

What you need to do is to go to the Tweetmeme site (Not to be confused with another great Twitter application Tweepme) and get the little javascript button and place it on any website that you want to be retweeted. You can also see the popular retweets at the site. Sort of makes Digg into a, well, a Dinosaur. As he sheds tears, NOT!

Be sure to put each website in the javascript that you plan to place the button on, unless you plan to use it on one website only, in which case it will pick up the website automatically. The Javascript button is not essential to having one of the hottest sites in Twitter, and Tweetmeme tracks all the hottest sites. But it helps.

I am really excited about this. It may help to get lots of folks on Tweepme then use this application and you can get lots of retweets of your websites! Woo Hoo!

Once you go to Tweetmeme you can see that it has a Digg-like popularity posting of the most popular bookmarks. These are the reason that you don't just want your website just twittered, but you want this application on your website so that it can be retweeted! This becomes VIRAL MARKETING at the highest level on the internet folks!

For you technical folks, this service is different than say, Tweetdeck. There you can retweet tweets. But with this service, you retweet webpages. This is the real viral deal

A fun feature of tweetmeme is a surfing option similar to stumbleupon, where you can bring up random websites. Those that have the tweetmeme javascript will be in the system as well as the other hot sites retweeted in Twitter. If you wonder if the site you want is in the system you can click on the "submit" option at the bottom of the Tweetmeme page.

Digg just got rid of its shout feature, which is how members communicate with each other. I think you are right, Digg is dead.

Hi Ethel, if you go to tweetmeme, and it is free, just sign up and have a look around. If you have a blog you can put the javascript on your blog to retweet so people can do so. It is a way of shouting and bookmarking your website at the same time. Hopefully Hubpages will put that button on hubs which would really be great, but we will see.
