Obsessive compulsive disorders are pretty hard to break. They are also difficult to recognize as well. Many people have the usual compulsivity, like fingernail biting, hand washing, etc. But most people do not have the disorder to the point of interfering with life to any great degree. I have trouble picking up pennies off the floor with no fingernails, but I do manage to find a little plastic card on my keychain that scoops under the moola.
When I was a kid, I had a really weird OCD. My dad had a small store in a small town in California. My dad's store had a post right in the middle of the entrance. Well, it got to the point where I had to go out the same way I went in, or in my mind I would be wrapping my path around the post. That was unacceptable to my mind. My mind was making a rule for me that I had to retrace my entrance, that I could not wrap around the post entering and then leaving. I could not break that rule for the longest time.
Anyway, this disorder was driving me crazy until I apparently just outgrew it. I think that I just got worn out or something because I stopped doing it. Could be that I stayed away from the store the older I got. And I never repeated the compulsion anywhere else with any other post. Whew. I am glad of that!
I read that some folks take hours out of their days to complete the obsessive compulsive acts. To me that would be such a prison, being a prisoner to your own mind. I have empathy for those people because of what I went through as a child.
I do have a couple of minor obsessive compulsive ways to this day besides the fingernails. I sometimes look more than once before driving into an intersection if NO CARS are coming. I view this as being similar to the golfer who must read a break into a straight putt. It is a compulsive need to double check. But it hasn't gotten so intrusive that I cannot go if needed. I suppose someone with a really compulsive problem with no traffic could wait minutes or until the guy behind him honks the horn before going.
When I was a child I had the thoughts of jumping from high places, a compulsion to want to, but I was able to suppress those desires because of fear of the consequences. I outgrew that one too, whew. I also was compelled to comb my hair in such a way as to make it perfect. I was compulsive about it. I outgrew that too.
I know that there are OCD's that are weird and strange beyond what I have expressed. Again, I feel empathy for anyone who is snared by that prison because it is not pleasant and can result in such terrible disorders such as bulemia, anxiety, panic attacks, Tourettes syndrome ( uncontrollable jerking of the head), etc.
Panic attacks can also be caused by asthma, so don't panic, lol, if you have asthma, into thinking that you have OCD. And shaking of the head uncontrollably in children may be Childhood Chorea, a nervous disorder that is not OCD and is not fatal. I developed that disorder when I was around six years old. I was treated for a few months at least and it went away.
There is another OCD that exists. I tell my daughter that she has the paralysis of analysis. One can have a gift of analysis but then it can, in some instances, seem to be almost compulsive and debilitating. I can see where that could become OCD in a hurry!
Some say that people of above average intelligence are more susceptable for OCD. I can accept that! I am above average, ha!
Obsessive Compulsive Disorders Aren't Fun or Funny Except in Hollywood
As Good As It Gets: A Study In OCD
Jack Nicholson plays a character in As Good As It Gets who cannot walk down a sidewalk and step on the lines. I outgrew that little crazy as a child, and so I can sympathize with anyone who really has the problem. Of course Jack had anxiety about relationships because of his various compulsions. The movie was, however, fun, entertaining, brilliantly written and brilliantly acted.
Perhaps OCD folks could find humor in the disorder and just maybe that could help them, who knows? Just remember all you people who do Hubpages, if you are making lists, if you are tinkering until an unreasonable hour, or if you are doing anything that is not just based upon a rational passion, you could have OCD. The obsessive thought leads to compulsive behavior and there you have it, OCD.
Now go wash your hands. Just kidding.

Too funny, I always tell my hubby that our cats are OCD because of their incessant grooming.
Great hub, very interesting and funny at the same time.
I guess my only OCD it´s when I´m here at hubpages: I can´t stop reading and commenting lol.
lol yeah ocd can be a pain...and it's very selective...I count everything, I can't step on the cracks in the sidewalk without feeling horrible guilt and sometimes pain (although that one has gotten better as I've gotten older), I have issues with certain writing things (i.e. punctuation, capitalization, etc.), I hate when things look cluttered or messy (I'm like Monk, with the candles all in size order...a candle that burns unevenly is destined for the trash can!!!)....I could go on and on. Yes, it's a hassle, but I find ways to laugh at myself, which makes it bearable. Love the cat video, it reminds me of my cat!
Is OCD something that can stem from anxiety and panic disorders? Great stories and info... thanks so much
I have CDO - it's like OCD, but the letters are in alphabetical order as they should be! :) Great hub!
we hate you people!!!!!...................jk! ilove y'all
hello there, i feel i have ocd though i'm not totally sure. like if i go to someone's house and it's a mess like a tornado came through, i find myself cleaning and organizing things before i will sit down or even bring my kids in the house. and slo i have been told that because of my fear of germs that i will make my kids sick one day. i will literally clean and disenfect my child after they eat somethin and if their clothes have just crumbs on them i change their outfit before doing anything else even going to the store. i have found your storys and video's very helpful and i feel like i can relate to some of them. thank you. hope you'll come check me out i have jut joined hub pages. have a bless day
I very amusing, well written and well put together hub. I really enjoyed it. Thank you.
I have OCD (or CDO ...) plenty, but not enough to disrupt my life. A few examples include the folding of all towels in half, half again, then thirds. The kitchen towels have to be stacked with no two matching design/colors adjacent to each other. The clothes in my closet are sorted by color, too. The silverware needs to be sorted in the dishwasher. I guess I do a lot of sorting -- organization OCD?! LOL! I'm sure it stems from my childhood, where there was no order whatsoever (not things, but people; alcoholic people) and now I like order in the things over which I can control. Since it doesn't disrupt the idea of living and, in many cases, organization can be a good thing, I live with it. :) I designed my "I Have CDO ..." T-shirt (at the link where my name is, if it's not stripped by moderators) with the idea that I can laugh about myself and my quirky habits a little bit.
I do, however, totally feel for people that have uncontrollable OCD that disrupts every day living. I've known some people with it, and it can make things so difficult for them. Frankly, I think the general population needs to just step back from bashing people with afflictions they don't understand. If you don't "get" it, shut the heck up. Acceptance is, IMO, enlightening.
I have the same behavior style as Jack Nicholson had in that movie when it comes to walking. I can't step on sidewalk cracks, tile lines, etc. It drives me nuts. In high school people used to kind of make fun of me for it. I can't explain why I do it, it just pisses me off if i don't. Most of my OCD is exhibited through the obsessions. When i was a young child, I saw movies like independence day, twister, and more and i literally became fearful of the sky. I would refuse to leave the house and would start crying if my parents forced me to. It's an awful thing to deal with, I feel like a slave trapped in my own mind. But I do feel Its okay to laugh it off once and a while, thanks for this article It's really cheered me up. :)
I enjoyed your article. I think it's good to find humor in things, especially if these "things" aren't disruptive in our lives.
I have some OCD tendencies. I eat a bowl of M&Ms or Skittles funny. I try to always keep the colors equal. If there is a bowl of pretzels, I always eat the broken ones first, until I have reached perfection.

Thanks for the share! My husband has OCD. He has never gone for treatment. It can be a little nerve racking living with someone like that.
