My Favorite Comedy Movie Classics

You can't find a comedy movie classic with the new breed of rarely funny comedians such as Adam Sandler and Will Ferrell who just don't make me laugh that much. No, my favorite all time movie classics will have none of that wasted effort. I will have a section relating to an honorable mention list because there are some great films in this list, but that didn't make it to the top three. Seems to me like the 1980's was a golden time for movie comedy by the way.

Here are my top three all time movie comedies in no order of preference:

Trading Places: Trading Places incorporated a brilliant concept of two guys being manipulated by the financial elite but getting their revenge in the end. Maybe this would play well with the banking crisis and the antics of Goldman Sachs.

Beverly Hills Cop: This movie has some foul language, but it is a brilliantly conceived movie, and is probably the most artfully flowing movie centering on an unorthodox cop set loose in staid Beverly Hills that could have been produced. Face it, you can't call comedies "artfully flowing" very often. The street smarts of the Detroit cop crack the case.

Caddyshack: This movie was a bit of a scandal when compared to proper golf etiquette. But if Jack Nicklaus likes it and plays it on the Golf Channel all the time, then we have made it to true acceptance in the golf world for this movie. Bill Murray is brilliant in this movie. Without question, the best scene in the history of film was of Bill Murray eating a candy bar after cleaning the pool for what everyone thought was a poop. You may think this is so juvenile, but the timing and buying into the character Murray previously constructed sold this scene. It was a scream.

Brilliant honorable mention films include in no order:

  • A Fish Called Wanda
  • High Anxiety
  • Coming to America
  • Airplane
  • Planes Trains and Automobiles
  • Naked Gun
  • Uncle Buck
  • The Great Outdoors
  • Meet the Parents
  • Ace Ventura
  • Ferris Bueller's Day Off
  • Groundhog Day
  • What About Bob

Thank you for your interesting read but I only know Beverly Hills Cops which they showed in England. Many good series they don't over here and we missing out.

Gary,

Good list of comedies. I liked Peter Sellers in the Pink Panther movies. I also like to harken back to classic Abbot and Costello films.

Hey Tom, it is interesting that Austin Powers films have a lot of comedy from Peter Sellers and the Pink Panther in them. The concept of Dr. Evil and his desire to destroy the world comes from Return of the Pink Panther. I found that movie to be very funny.

I liked the silent comedies, and would recommend Harold Lloyd, Buster Keaton and Charlie Chaplan anytime. Also, Hello, Beverly Hills cop is a movie, not a TV series, so you should be able to find it. Thanks Mickey for stopping by.

Out of your list, I like "Meet the Parents" the best.

I thought that was a classic too. What hell it is to be trying to impress your intimidating in law. I am sure lots of folks related to that film. And it was very funny too.

Thanks for the tip. Certainly As Good As It Gets was a memorable movie, and had comedy elements. But it was very dramatic as well and I think that movie is in a class by itself. But then, not as just a comedy. I commented on it here: http://hubpages.com/hub/Funny-OCD-Tendancies

Bill Murray is my favorite as well. His dialogue from Ghostbusters movie is really cool "Back off man,i'm scientist".

But, as Dan Aykroyd said, he didn't study.

I think you are absolutely right. He is a comedic genius. And it runs in the family from what I read about him.
