Swing Speed Is Critical to Driving Distance in Golf
Swing speed is often what sets apart the professional from the amateur golfer. Microwave detectors can now analyse your swing speed for low cost. Technique is more important than strength in determining swing speed. That is why golfers of slight stature are able to compete with muscular fellows. And we all know that some female golfers, notably former number one, Lorena Ochoa, can hit the ball a long way while weighing about 120 pounds! Why Is It Helpful to Have a Swing Speed Analysis?
Why is it important to have a swing speed radar in your golf toolkit? Well, for one thing, you can fit yourself with the correct golf ball. Take a couple of different balls out to the range and use your analysis to measure your distance and control using different balls. You may decide you need a high compression ball if your golf swing is slower, and yet, you can control the accuracy better with a low compression ball. Using your swing radar, you can focus on getting the speed up, and you may be able to switch to a low compression ball.
Golf clubs themselves are fitted based upon swing speed and launch monitors. You can improve your swing speed before being fitted for your new clubs, and this will make your swing more efficient in the long run.

Great advice, bgamall, that hits the golf ball out of the park (and on the fairway.) Most tips talk about the various aspects of the swing, but swing speed is almost always ignored -- and without it one can never be a truly good golfer. Your selection of videos is superb. They tell the story simply and in a straightforward manner. I haven't seen anything like them. Thanks a million.

I'm not sure about that first Somax video advocating Palmer's swing as a better model than Woods'. Arnie has a pretty peculiar swing that requires an awesome talent and timing. I understand the point they are making but I still feel it would be far more beneficial to a beginner or novice golfer to study Tiger's swing because there is less chance of misinterpretation.
If I remember correctly, Tiger and Butch Harmon worked on limiting the speed of Tiger's hip clearance when he underwent his first major swing overhaul in 1998. It shortened his distance but gained him accuracy. Still, I can understand the video emphasizing hip clearance to gain speed because unresponsive hips probably cost many amateurs a lot of yardage.
I think swing speed is something that comes naturally from having a fundamentally sound swing. But it is clearly important to have your speed measured when being fitted for new clubs. I wasn't actually aware that those speedometer machines existed. If you could plug one into a Nintendo Wii and hook it up to a wide screen TV to replicate your shot within a virtual golf course, I'd buy one with my next paycheck. I'd also need to buy a widescreen TV and Nintendo Wii so I probably wouldn't have enough money left for the rent. But hey, golf comes first.

Hi great hub I have never worried about swing speed I guess it may be due to the 11 handicap I seem to carry. I find the most important thing to me is to practice and learn all I can about putting.I never worry about distance but in hot weather I hit one drive over 315 to the edge of the apron center stage for me.with a new driver I was just about to junk when I remembered to hit the ball on the inside of the club face a bit to correct the slice then it launched a few drives for me. stupid game no one should golf.
